    How to Do Automatic Writing

Maybe you’ve heard of automatic writing and you want to know how to do it. In this article, I will show you how. Automatic writing is a great, non-scary way of channeling your Higher Self or Spirit Guides through writing.  It allows you to ‘download’ their perspective subconsciously using claircognizance and transcribe it as it comes in.

    How To Do Automatic Writing

The basic recipe for automatic writing is that you open a word document (or get a pen and paper if you wish) and you type/write a question. But remember that you are not consulting your thinking mind. In order to do it successfully, you have to put your mind to one side.

In many ways, doing automatic writing is like being ‘in the flow’ while writing. If you’re a writer then you will know what I’m talking about when I say ‘in the flow’.  It’s the state when you have many creative ideas and they all seem to fit together quite nicely, and you can transcribe them coherently and quickly – and often it feels quite exciting. Yet at the same time, your conscious mind is not labouring away – it feels effortless and light. You can also be in that state when you do automatic writing – not so much in a creative writing sense, but in an intuitive sense.

    An Example of Automatic Writing

Perhaps you know the book Conversations with God (which is incidentally one of my favourite books).  It is supposedly a channelled work, although I think the author Neale Donald Walsh actually channeled his Higher Self.  If you’ve read that book and you were surprised at how insightful and progressive some of it was, know that your Higher Self has got some equally interesting things to say, if not about our world, then definitely about your life and where you’re going.  There are loads more channelled books available too.  Perhaps you can recommend some of your favourites in the comments.

    Why do Automatic Writing?

Here are some examples of when you could do it…

    • When you have a fear of spirits and are too scared to contact your guides in any other way
    • When you are not yet very clairvoyant or clairaudient (i.e. you can’t hear or see your Spirit Guides), so you want to try another way.  Automatic writing is actually very easy if you manage to put your mind to one side, and I know lots of people who have trouble hearing their inner voice who have had success with automatic writing.
    • When you want to get your Higher Self’s perspective on something that is bothering you – (I used to do automatic writing when I was upset about something and needed to raise my vibration. I’d tune into my higher self and start writing.  She always had some very comforting and insightful things to say about any situation.)
    • Or just when you have some questions that you want a spiritual perspective on.

Some tips for putting the mind aside and doing automatic writing successfully

    1. Start each automatic writing session with ‘My Spirit Guides or My Higher Self’ or ‘My Angels’ as the first line

You can call on all of them if you want.  Be clear about whose input you want, as it sets an intention to hear from that being.

If you want, you can also see your guides as parts or extensions of you that you can access whenever you want, like your subconscious.  (The more you see these entities as beings outside of you, the more channeling them may seem quite elusive.)

If you want, you can also raise your vibration and connect with your guides/Higher Self before you begin typing.  For example, you can do some deep breathing, or visualize going up to a room to meet with your guides, so that you can get their input for the duration of the session.

    2. Just start writing and don’t worry about what you’re writing at first

For example, type your question and just see what comes out when you put your fingers on the keys.  Just start writing about anything that comes into your head, just as you would if you were journaling about your day.  The trick with this is to get used to writing (if you are not already).  The more you’re used to writing, the easier it is to get into that ‘flow’ state when writing, where you can channel your inner sage.

    3. Setting a timer while you do it can be helpful

This is so that you don’t have time to think about what you’re writing.  That works particularly well when you have a set of questions you want to ask your guides.  I do sometimes set a timer when I’m writing a blog article, especially when I’m being too much of a perfectionist or my mind is being very chatty and not saying very helpful things.  Setting myself a time limit focuses my mind on the task at hand, and for automatic writing it can help to focus your energy.

    4. Create the right conditions so that you can lose your inhibitions about what you’re writing

Sometimes while I’ve been doing automatic writing, my mind was judging the information I’m getting and wondering what people around me would think if they were reading it.  If you do automatic writing on a shared or borrowed computer, you might feel inhibited.  So, make sure you do it while alone and make sure you have privacy with your computer – one reason why I prefer a word document over pen and paper.

    5. Don’t allow your mind to interpret the information while you’re getting it

You can interpret it afterwards.  But know that it is totally normal for the mind to butt in and judge information in the process.  When I started doing readings, occasionally I would be getting information and my mind butts in and freaks out: “what if this is all wrong” – especially if it’s highly specific information.  However, experience has taught me that the mind’s fears are unwarranted in those situations.  The mind can only react according to its previous experiences and its task of keeping you safe and secure.  Intuition sees a lot further than that.  So, know the role of the mind, acknowledge it for doing its job but don’t give it too much attention while you’re doing this exercise.

How do you know if you’re really channeling spiritual guidance?

In my experience, channeled information tends to be high vibrational in nature.  It will often comfort you, provide clarity or will raise your mood in some way.  If it feels negative or feels heavy, you’re probably not channeling a source that you want to tap into or you may just be channeling your own emotional body, if you are not feeling very good.

What you channel via writing will usually not sound like your voice. Mine speaks with authority and sounds completely different from the voice that I ‘think’ in.

Another feature of intuitive guidance is that it tends to be very clear, usually feels light and is often simply expressed.  Having said that, I have read automatic writing that is poetic and metaphorical in nature.  But don’t be hung up on how yours should sound or be.  If you do it often enough, you will soon get a sense for what your automatic writing ‘feels’ like.

Please leave a comment if you want to recommend any more channeled works or if you have something to say about your experiences with automatic writing.

In this article I discuss what clairvoyance is exactly and also how to develop this gift.

Clairvoyance means ‘clear-seeing’. Almost everyone knows what clairvoyance is — it’s the ability to see Spirit through your third eye. Clairvoyants can see energy fields, spirits, symbols and get visual premonitions. Developing clairvoyance isn’t difficult — in this article, I give you some pointers to do this.

Some clairvoyants see things in their mind’s eye (which is like the movie screen that you see inside your mind when you close your eyes) and some can see with their physical eyes. Both are possible, but it’s more common to see in the mind’s eye. Whereas a clairsentient might look at your photo and pick up on your feelings and emotions, a clairvoyant would probably see your aura, the essence of your spirit and Spirit Guides or Guardian Angels around you. When reading a situation, a clairvoyant may see a symbol or a ‘movie-scene’ which is a metaphor for the situation.

Receiving clairvoyant images is one thing, but not all clairvoyants are gifted at interpreting what they see. To interpret a vision or symbol, you need to use your claircognizance or clairaudience as well.

I’ve written articles on the three other major psychic gifts: clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance. The reason why I didn’t write an article about clairvoyance sooner is because it is not really a common psychic gift.

On the other hand, I felt compelled to write about claircognizance and clairsentience because they are so common and the people who have these gifts often do not know that these even constitute psychic gifts which can be developed. By contrast, in my mini readings, I’ve only read for about ten people who have been natural clairvoyants (that’s about ten people out of 350) and most of those people knew about their clairvoyant abilities. I guess this rare factor could be why clairvoyance is thought of as THE psychic gift to have, because it’s more exclusive somehow.

Why Most People Don’t Need Clairvoyant Gifts

Are clairvoyant abilities better than the other psychic gifts, like clairaudience or clairsentience?

I don’t think so. All the intuitive vehicles are meant to work together. In fact, I’d say that clairvoyance is not always needed, unless you’re a medium.

On the other hand, most people need some clairsentience, to pick up vibes from people. Some clairaudience or claircognizance is helpful as well, to get quick warnings from your guides or higher self, like ‘run!’ or ‘don’t take that road’. But I can’t think of any situations where clairvoyant abilities are absolutely essential in everyday life, unless you do psychic/mediumship readings in your work. I personally do not use clairvoyance in my work much. I do sometimes ‘see’ clients’ past lives, but when I need to know details about a situation, my guides will tend to just ‘put’ the information into my brain, rather than sending me symbols or metaphors or images.

How to Develop your Clairvoyant Abilities

Even if you’re not a natural clairvoyant, you can still develop your clairvoyance. Flexing my clairvoyant muscles was the first thing I did when I started developing psychically. I picked up a good book called Psychic Development for Beginners by William Hewitt and began using his exercises to open up my third eye (the exercise is below.)

I have to say that the below exercise opened up my third eye (the centre of clairvoyant abilities) quite spectacularly for a few days, then I got scared and shut it down again! I started to see my guides in my mind’s eye, and I saw things moving in the corner of my eye. I also saw coloured lights around people and I began to have really strange and vivid dreams, in colour. I wasn’t used to seeing so much, and it was overwhelming for me.

    An Exercise for Developing Clairvoyance

The exercise is this: visualize yourself holding seven balloons, of the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and indigo. Let the balloons go one by one, beginning with the red balloon. Watch them float up to the blue sky until they disappear before you release the next one.

If you’re not used to visualizing, then this exercise could be quite difficult for you at first. You may find it hard to concentrate or it may be difficult for you to visualize vividly or in colour — it all depends on how developed your imagination muscles are.

Any activity which uses your visual imagination is good for strengthening clairvoyant abilities, because your imagination is the tool that Spirit uses to send you information, in the form of images. The more well-oiled your ‘imagination cogs’ are, the easier it is for spirit to send you clear images.

Here’s another way to open up your clairvoyance: Imagine a third eye, between your eyebrows. Visualize the eyelid on your third eye opening up. All visualization does is set an intention to do something. If you visualize this regularly, you’re putting energy behind your intention to open up your third eye, the centre of your clairvoyant abilities.

    Differentiating Between Imagination and Intuition

So, how can you tell the difference between what’s from your imagination and what’s from Spirit?

When you receive an image from Spirit, you are not in control. You are not creating the image — it just appears in your mind’s eye without any active participation from you.

    Blocks to Clairvoyance

A few people who are natural clairvoyants never see any evidence of their gift. When this happens, it usually means there is a blockage or an energy leak at the third eye chakra. At the bottom of this there tends to be some trauma caused by having ‘seen’ something unexpected or unpleasant.

There are two reasons I personally did not use to put much effort into developing my clairvoyant abilities further: one is that I felt I didn’t need it too much for my work and the second is that I didn’t really want to see, because I had a scary experience in the past.

When I was about five or six years old, I was playing in my bed late at night. I looked up and saw a woman standing in the corner of my room by the door, staring at me — just writing about it gives me the creeps. I have never been more frightened in my life than at that moment. All I can remember is pulling the covers over my head and hoping she’d go away. I remember my heart beating so fast that I thought it would burst! I think I decided at that point that seeing spirits was too frightening for me and it took a lot of time and some healing before my clairvoyance developed properly.

A lot of people have a blockage like this, due to some sort of frightening psychic experience. If this applies to you and you can locate or remember what is blocking your third eye, use my angelic healing exercise (method # 3) in this article: ‘Four Ways to Heal Yourself’ – it really works!

Any general blocks to truth can also affect your clairvoyance (and the overall state of your intuitive faculties). For example, if you live your life in a state of denial or falsehood, your clairvoyance will be weakened. If you want to have strong intuition, get into the habit of facing up to the truth in your life. If you kid yourself about something on a regular basis, it weakens your trust in your own perceptions and intuition and this will affect your clairvoyant abilities.

    Further Tips:

    • Place a lapis lazuli or clear quartz crystal over your third eye chakra, or go into a crystal shop with the intention of finding the right crystal to help you to open up your third eye. You may feel really drawn to one crystal in particular which can help you.
    • When you’re working with your clairvoyance at first, it can also help to close your eyes and use your mind’s eye rather than expecting to see things straight away with your physical eyes.
    • Use the affirmation “I am profoundly clairvoyant. It is safe for me to see”
    • Release and heal whatever fears or trauma you have around seeing spirits.
