In this article, I’m going to talk about a manifesting technique originated by Neville Goddard, called the ‘Lullaby method’.
I’m going to explain:
- What it is & how it works
- The advantages of doing it/who should choose this technique?
- Who this technique isn’t suitable for
- How to do it
- How long you should use this technique for
- A note on using it during the day instead of at night
- What if you have practised it consistently for a period of time and not seen any changes in your outer world…
Neville Goddard (1905-1972) was a Barbadian mystic and manifesting teacher who coined the term ‘The Law of Assumption’, an alternative to the Law of Attraction. The Law of Assumption posits that what one assumes and believes to be true in one’s subconscious mind is what will manifest in one’s world. And Neville taught that we can change the contents of our subconscious mind through manifesting techniques like the lullaby method.
Neville Goddard’s works have had the biggest influence on me, in terms of manifesting (I’ve had a lot of success from using his teachings and techniques.)
1. What is his lullaby method for manifesting?
The Lullaby method involves affirming nightly before sleep, while one is in a relaxed state. The aim of this technique is to meditate on one’s affirmation and thus change one’s vibrational state to match what one desires to manifest into the world.
Neville Goddard taught that this can be a highly effective manifesting technique (more on that below!)
This technique is called the lullaby method because it’s a short affirmation that is repeated softly when one is ready to go to sleep. Just as a parent could lull their child to sleep by softly singing to her, and putting her into a particular state of mind that is conducive to a peaceful sleep (e.g. feeling safe and comforted), so we can do this to ourselves with this lullaby method. This enables us to fall asleep in a positive state of mind and continue manifesting from that place as we sleep (our energy field and subconscious mind are transmitting their frequencies 24/7).
Using this lullaby technique regularly can help us to shift what our subconscious mind and energy field are transmitting through the night, to something more positive that is in alignment with what we desire to manifest.
Neville Goddard often taught techniques that are done in a state of relaxation like this because he believed that the subconscious mind is most receptive to a new idea (and easily impressed by it and likely to take it on as something it will later transmit out into the Universe), when one is in that in-between state – between waking and sleep.
2. Who should choose this lullaby method?
This technique is most suitable for those who are working on manifesting many intentions all at once.
The story that Neville Goddard relayed in one of his books illustrates the effectiveness of this technique for someone who is trying to manifest multiple changes…
Neville Goddard in his book ‘The Law and the Promise’ tells the story of a woman who had no job, no money (she was behind on rent and had an old banger car that needed replacing), no proper clothes for seeking a job, and no friends or family who she could rely on.
She was 55 years old and felt that it would be difficult for her to find a job.
She tried to use Neville Goddard’s visualisation technique (known as the SATS technique) but found it overwhelming because there were many things she needed and it was too tiring to visualise all her desires regularly.
And so instead, she distilled her desires in a single phrase “Isn’t it wonderful! Something marvellous is happening to me right now!’’ (abbreviated to “Isn’t it wonderful?”) and repeated the phrase night after night while falling asleep.
As she was falling asleep, she felt the way she would feel, if her circumstances had changed in such a way that she suddenly had all her material needs and desires met.
Two months later, she saw an old friend who mentioned he was on his way to visit NYC and spend some time there.
When this friend came back home, he passed on a cheque to her for $2500 US (which is the equivalent of $27,000 today).
He had seen a mutual friend while in NYC — someone she hadn’t seen in 25 years — who had become extremely wealthy during that time. He clearly wanted to share his wealth with her (although she did not know why) and asked this friend to pass on the cheque to her. Over the next two years, she continued to receive these monthly $2500 cheques from this friend that enabled her to pay her rent, buy a car, buy clothes and not have to work. The friend even set up a legal arrangement so that she would receive these cheques for the rest of her life.
It’s clear that this can be a very effective technique for some people.
Now let’s look at who this technique isn’t right for…
3. The lullaby technique isn’t suitable for you if you:
- Either fall asleep within seconds of lying down (this does not give you enough time to practise this method)
- Or if you struggle with insomnia (the repetition may keep you awake rather than relax you).
I would say it works best for people who naturally take several minutes to fall asleep.
4. How to use the lullaby method
Here are the instructions for this lullaby method:
- Decide how you would feel if your desired intention came to pass in reality. For example, maybe you would feel grateful, delighted, joyful or relieved.
- Next, come up with a short affirmation which embodies how you would feel.
Some examples that Neville Goddard gave are:
- ‘Thank you!’ (Said once or three times as if you are addressing someone who helped your desire come to pass)
- ‘It is done!’
- ‘It is finished!’
- ‘Isn’t it wonderful?!’ (As if something wonderful had just happened to you)
You can also come up with your own phrase.
Neville Goddard said that the only rules for your affirmation are that (1) it should be short – limited to three words – and that (2) it implies fulfilment of your desire.
- When you’re ready to sleep, get into bed and imagine that you are sleepy — try to induce the state of being about to sleep. Then repeat your phrase over and over to yourself, with feeling. (I prefer to do this silently in my head but you could also say it out loud softly to yourself.)
Neville Goddard says that one needs to “do this until your mind is dominated by a single sensation of thankfulness” (or whatever it is you are seeking to feel, such as joy, relief or delight.)
Your aim is also to induce the feeling that your intention is real and has come to pass.
- Do this every night until you have your desire in physical reality.
5. How long should I use the lullaby method for?
The woman in the story above used this technique every night for 3 months. I would say that one should use it until their desired intention has come to pass. Consistency is important.
6. Can I use this lullaby technique during the day instead of before sleep?
Yes, however you need to bear in mind that part of the reason for the effectiveness of this technique is that you are doing it when you’re very relaxed.
You could take a nap during the day and induce sleep that way, or you could do a long guided meditation (such as a Dr Joe Dispenza meditation) and use this technique straight afterwards. It may not work as well if you take a few minutes out of your busy day to do it, without relaxing first.
7. What if I’ve used this technique for several months and I have not seen any changes in my outer world?
Consider karmic complexes – these are common blocks to manifesting that can prevent manifesting techniques from working. If you’ve been consistent with the lullaby method for 3-6 + months with no results, it may be worth exploring whether a karmic complex is blocking your manifestation.
