Lots of people who set out to develop their intuitive abilities do so because they want to be able to communicate with the unseen world on demand. They want access to their Spirit Guides. They want to be able to connect with their higher self and their angels. They want guidance, advice, protection and to live a life infused with grace and awe.

But lots of people who go down this path never get there. Maybe their intuition opens up in flashes, but they can’t seem to turn it on on demand. Or perhaps it never opens up in the first place. And there are 3 main reasons why that happens – 3 potholes to fall into on the path, if you like.

In this article, I’m going to explain what those 3 potholes are and how you can make sure to avoid them.

If you would like to develop your intuitive abilities but you’ve never reached your potential in this area, pay attention because one of these reasons will apply to you.

Pothole #1: You don’t have a plan with a structure to it

The number one reason people don’t manage to develop their psychic abilities is because they don’t have a plan. They might listen to some guided meditations on YouTube, do some exercises in a book and wear a crystal that opens up their third eye. But there’s no structure or plan to what they’re doing.

Developing psychic abilities is like building a staircase to get to your destination. The staircase doesn’t have loads of steps but it does have a few and you need to know what those steps are.

Miss one of the steps and you’ll have an unusable staircase and you won’t be able to connect with Spirit. 

One of the steps is that you need to master stillness or get practised in getting into the alpha state.

Another step is that you need to be able to raise your vibration at will to build a bridge to connect with Spirit.

The problem with doing things here and there to develop your abilities (like a guided meditation or some exercises from a book) is that you may be building one step of your staircase, but missing something else that would build another missing step.

And so you end up with some of your steps built, but you’re missing one, and you can’t use your staircase to connect. That’s very common when you have no plan and you don’t know what the steps are and what you’re missing.

Let’s have a look at the second most common reason for not managing to develop one’s psychic abilities.

Pothole #2: You are developing and using the wrong intuitive senses for you

The second most common reason for not managing to develop your psychic abilities is that you’re trying to hone psychic gifts you don’t have and then you’re using that gift you’re not strong in to try to connect with Spirit..

(There are several psychic gifts, including clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognizance.)

That can be a real uphill struggle.

You need to know what your natural intuitive gifts are, and which techniques utilise those gifts and are right for you. You also need to have exercises to hone those particular gifts.

So step 1 is identifying your strongest gifts, step two is sensitizing those specific gifts and step 3 is finding the techniques to connect with Spirit that strictly utilise those gifts. You need to be strategic about how you approach this.

Pothole #3: You haven’t set up your ‘spiritual security system’.

Some people do manage to build their staircase and develop their gifts, but once they do, they often don’t have a plan for avoiding the sources of negative guidance (like random earthbound spirits). And they don’t like having psychic abilities because they’re getting guidance that does not feel positive to them.

This is totally unnecessary and you need to know how to channel safely so you can get the high-vibrational guidance and totally skip the negative sources of guidance.

So those are the top 3 reasons for not managing to develop psychic abilities:

1. Having no plan and not knowing what you’re missing
2. Developing, honing and utilising gifts that you’re not strong in
3. Not having a way to cut off negative sources of guidance.
