I received a question from a reader recently about the difference between angels and Spirit Guides in channelling — how can you tell if you’re channelling your Spirit Guide or your Guardian Angel?
Let’s have a look at the differences between these two types of being first of all, and then I’ll go into how you can tell them apart when channelling…
Spirit Guides are assigned to us even before we incarnate. We usually have between 4 and 8, although 5-7 is the usual number. Many people have just one group of guides (although it is also possible to have multiple groups of guides — I’ve seen that among intuitives who are channelling a lot for other people and those who are having a big impact on the world).
Spirit Guides are human souls, and sometimes they have walked the earth with us, and we have known them in past lives. They receive training on how to help an incarnated soul navigate their path through life, and their sole aim is to help us align with our highest path and purpose when we’re incarnated here. They do through by sending us guidance in a variety of ways — through our claircognizance, clairsentience, clairaudience and clairvoyance. They may also send us guidance through our dreams.
Angels on the other hand are different class of spiritual being
They are not human souls and they have never walked the earth. Their role is to hold energies that benefit us (and in doing so, help to raise our vibration) and they also protect us.
Most of my clients have either 2 or 3 guardian angels. One of these angels is like a bodyguard angel who is particularly concerned with our personal safety and keeping us alive, if it is not our time to cross over to the other side. And another of these angels will focus on our spiritual and psychological safety. (If we have 3 angels, we might have an extra bodyguard angel or a spiritual/emotional protection angel.)
Angels also send us guidance but it tends to be guidance that is focused around protection. They may even intervene physically to protect us.
One of my favourite books about angels is ‘An Enquiry into the Existence of Guardian Angels‘, written by the French journalist Pierre Jovanovic.
He was inspired to begin writing this book after an experience of what he believed was angelic intervention. He was driving along the highway in Silicon Valley when he was suddenly pushed to one side of the seat by an invisible force. At the moment this occurred, a bullet came through the window and would have hit him, had he not moved. But he did not move himself — instead he was moved.
This is the kind of service our Guardian Angels can provide for us.
Now let’s have a look at the difference between the two types of being when channelling:
How can you know when you’re channelling a Spirit Guide vs an Angel?
There are several key differences between Spirit Guides and angels (and how they present themselves) which can help you to differentiate between the two types of being.
#1: Spirit Guides look more human
As I mentioned, Spirit Guides are human souls, and Guardian Angels are not. (This means that Spirit Guides were once incarnated on earth.) As a result, when you ‘see’ a Spirit Guide in your mind’s eye, they often present as either male or female. Sometimes they may be wearing the clothes or have the ethnicity of their most recent past life.
On the other hand, if you can see an angel clairvoyantly in your mind’s eye, they will present in a much more gender-neutral way. They may appear to be wearing gender-neutral clothing, such as a robe. They may not even look human. They may have wings; they may glow or float. They will often have light emanating from their bodies. They may also appear to be very tall, like giants.
#2: Angels tend to communicate using clairsentience (aka our feelings)
Angels are also more likely to communicate with us predominantly via our clairsentience, even if we’re not particularly clairsentient. This is because as mentioned, the role of our guardian angels is not just to protect us on our path, but also to influence and comfort us with their loving and peaceful energies. As a result, they often communicate with us through our feelings and transmit those energies to us, not as an idea, but as a feeling that we can receive through our hearts.
For example, if someone is crying and in emotional distress, and they pray to their angels, they may suddenly be flooded with peace and well-being. If a sudden sense of well-being occurs after prayer, this is often the work of our Guardian angels.
#3: Angels leave a trail of coloured/sparkling lights in their wake
If you see sparkling lights or coloured lights that appear in your peripheral vision and then disappear when you look at them directly, this is also often the work of our angels. (More on that here.)
However, there is a caveat to what I mentioned in this article: there are some people out there who are much more naturally attuned to their angels then their guides, and they may also receive other forms of guidance from their angels (instead of through their guides, as is more usual). This isn’t very common but it can occur. More on that here: 8 Signs Your Predominant Spiritual Relationship Is With Your Angels (& Not your Guides)
