Channelling Spirit Through Automatic Writing

This is an interview with me which was originally printed in UK Soul & Spirit Magazine. It has some tips for channelling Spirit through writing which I wanted to share here…

What is automatic writing?

Automatic writing is a very simple and effective method for channeling your Spirit Guides, Higher self and angels. It allows you to ‘download’ information from spiritual sources and transcribe it on paper as it comes in, while bypassing the conscious mind.

Personally, it is one of my favourite techniques for channeling Spirit.

How is it useful as a spiritual practice?

Like all good spiritual practices, automatic writing can lift your mood, provide you with something immovable to hold on to during chaotic times, give you clarity and help you to see your life from a larger perspective.

We do not go through this life without spiritual support and assistance – our guides, Higher self and angels are always there for us.

Where do the words written during automatic writing come from?

Automatic writing can come from your soul, Spirit Guides, angels, deceased loved ones, ancestors, or even masters and teachers. You choose where you would like it to come from, and then call on that source of guidance.

How can automatic writing help our readers – spiritually or emotionally or practically?

Automatic writing is a bit like a therapy session with a wise, loving, high-vibrational being! If you’re upset, you’ll find comfort. If you have a problem, you’ll often find a solution. If you need help making a decision, you’ll find guidance.

Connecting with Spirit in this way can also really give us a sense of perspective in our lives. We are meant to live our lives connected with Spirit – otherwise, we can get so bogged down in the minutiae of daily life and lose focus on what really matters.

Automatic writing is also a good way to get to know yourself on a deep level, by asking yourself questions like: What does my Spirit want? What are my values? Who am I? Why am I here?

Give a technique our readers can use to try automatic writing e.g. instructions on how to automatic write.

  • Open a Word document (or get a pen and paper if you wish) and write out a question.
  • See what comes out in response when you put your fingers on the keys.

The trick is to switch off your conscious mind during this exercise, so no judging or analyzing at this stage – that can come later.

Are there any tools that might help facilitate automatic writing?

Yes, there are a couple of practical tools I’d like to mention which can be helpful:

Create the right conditions so that you can lose your inhibitions about what you’re writing. Sometimes when you do automatic writing, your mind can judge the information you get.  If you do automatic writing on a shared or borrowed computer, you might feel inhibited.  So, make sure you do it while alone and make sure you have privacy with your computer – one reason why I prefer a Word document over pen and paper.

Speaking from your own personal experience: What does it feel like when you automatic write? How did you discover automatic writing?

Automatic writing was one of the first techniques I ever used to consciously connect with my Higher self and guides. Back then, I took a class by a teacher named Slade Roberson, and being a claircognizant (someone who receives intuitive guidance through my brain; in the form of ideas and information), I took to this method immediately.

For me, automatic writing feels like being ‘in the flow’ while writing. Being ‘in the flow’ is that state when you have many creative ideas and they all seem to fit together quite nicely, and you can transcribe them coherently and quickly – and often it feels quite exciting. Yet at the same time, your conscious mind is not labouring away – it feels effortless and light, because it’s guided by something higher than your conscious mind.

What would you say to people who worry they are being possessed while automatic writing & that the spirit might be malevolent?

The worst thing that could happen when you use automatic writing is that you accidentally channel an earthbound spirit, which is a soul who has not fully crossed over after death. (Souls can occasionally become ‘earthbound’ after death if they were very stuck and fearful in life, or if there was something very unresolved about their death.)

Contrary to popular opinion, earthbound spirits do not tend to be evil – they are mainly stuck and fearful.

Personally, I believe that is as ‘negative’ as it gets. I don’t agree that we need to be afraid of negative forces while channeling – our angels do a good job of protecting us, too.

For those who are worried about channeling something malevolent, here are some tips to help you to recognize true spiritual guidance:

  • Channeled information tends to be high-vibrational in nature.  It will comfort you, provide clarity or raise your mood in some way.
  • What you channel via writing will not usually sound like your ‘voice’. My Higher self speaks with more authority, and sounds rather different from the voice that I ‘think’ in.
  • Another feature of intuitive guidance is that it tends to be clear, usually feels light (as opposed to ‘heavy’) and is often simply expressed.

Is there a protective ritual you use before beginning automatic writing? Please describe.

Be clear about whose input you want, as it sets an intention to hear from that being.

You can also actively call on your Guardian angels to protect you – everyone has two or three Guardian angels who do just that.

Happy writing!

Fantastic article, I am also claircognizant like you Anna, and I was recently doing automatic writing, though I am usually using a pen and paper, after reading your advice I will try to type directly on my laptop. Thanks! Blessings!

Another claircognizant here! That’s rare. Usually the clairvoyants and audients get all the glory :-). This method reminds me very much of Melody Beattie’s gratitude-writing project. She put it in to book form with a catchy title that doesn’t really reflect the power behind this method: “Make Miracles in Forty Days”. She does it all the time of course, not just forty days, but I am sure there was some pressure to make it more alluring to people. I have felt that higher self/shrink benefit a few times while writing. I was certainly in some kind of light, loving energy flow. Need to do it more often. Thank you for putting this on your site for those of us who didn’t read it in the magazine.

I’m a claircognizant too lol. It’s like we are all attending a group meeting 🙂 I also have automatically written. I love consciously channeling. My higher self is really nice. I don’t usually talk to her though because I generally just use automatic writing/ conscious channeling information for personal healing efforts. I’m probably overdue for a soothing conversation with her or I should just open up a past saved session and reread it. Free therapy lol. I really enjoy your site Anna:)

    Hi Anna
Thanks for this post. I’m a journalist and writer, and didn’t realise till just now that you have described, to a tee, my creative process. Writing has always been easy for me – hence the career path I’ve chosen – but I’ve always described it as ‘taking dictation’. I do my research first, let it codgitate a bit and then wait for ‘the voice’ to start talking. It’s always been like that and is a pleasure. It’s also never the same voice – some stories are from a man, while others get the female voice. I’m turning 40 this year and have noticed ‘the voice’ is happening less and less as I age. Can one ever ‘grow out of’ claircognizance?

I have just finished my first session of automatic writing and I am blown away by the revelations I received! It was a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to my next session.
I believe I have Clairsentience gift as I am very sensitive to others emotions and vibrations around me. I do see pictures in my third eye and flashes of light or people/animals from the corner of my eye too, so may also be clairvoyant?
Thank you for writing such an uplifting and informative blog.

  6. Anna

This is a great method for claircognizants!

Amber – so glad to hear you enjoy these articles.

Occasionally I will write an article in this way too, and if I go back later to read, it’s as if someone else wrote it.

Amanda – I haven’t heard of anyone growing out of claircognizance..perhaps that is due to something other than age?
