One of the biggest hurdles to putting the Law of Assumption into practice is belief.
Many people who use the Law do not have faith in it, and so they are constantly doubting and looking to the outside world for confirmation that it works. This can keep you in a loop of never creating what you desire.
Here’s how a lack of belief can sometimes keep you stuck:
In order to create what you desire, you have to “turn your back on the world of the senses” and ignore the 3D. Your current 3D world is but a time lapse shadow that is cast by your consciousness and state of being — your assumptions, words, actions, beliefs and the thoughts and feelings that you were identifying with, usually over the past several weeks.
You are the authority over your 3D world and you can create anything you want in the 3D by giving it to yourself in your 4D world (aka your imagination) first. But you have to embody the state of being of the person who already has what you want, and you have to persist in this embodiment over a period of days, weeks or months, until what you are imagining has “hardened into fact”, as Neville Goddard put it.
But people who lack belief in the Law of Assumption often cannot persist in this exercise, because they’re constantly looking to the 3D world for confirmation that the Law of Assumption techniques they are practising are having a result, and they sometimes want fast results. This focus on the 3D world can cause people to doubt, creating a state of lack.
So, not having sufficient belief in the Law of Assumption can sometimes keep you stuck in your present 3D circumstances, even if you desperately want change.
Here’s how to fix this.
Test the Law of Assumption out with something small
Instead of jumping in at the deep end and working on manifesting your wildest dreams, start small to build your faith in the Law.
Neville Goddard (the New Thought author and lecturer who popularised the Law of Assumption teachings) recommended that his students start with the Ladder Exercise.
Here it is:
1. Get into a meditative state by breathing deeply for a minute or so.
2. Then say to yourself inside your mind: “I will not climb a ladder”.
See a ladder in front of you. Decide whether your ladder is indoors or outdoors. Decide on whether it is going to be made of wood or metal. Decide on how tall the ladder is. (Note that you may not manifest these details, and the details really do not matter – this is just for you to make your vision as vivid as possible.)
Next, see yourself climbing the first rung, then the second rung, then the third, and so on, until you reach the top.
Once you reach the top, again say to yourself “I will not climb a ladder”.
Do this once a day at least. Neville Goddard recommended doing it when you’re totally relaxed and just before sleep for best results (and this is an ideal time to do it) but you can also do it during the day, as long as you take a few minutes to meditate and enter a relaxed state beforehand.
On top of that exercise, I also recommend affirming “I will not climb a ladder” regularly. You should be affirming for a set number of minutes per day, saying over and over inside your mind (or out loud) “I will not climb a ladder”.
I recommend doing this when you are doing some mindless task such as driving, washing dishes or showering, for 10-20 minutes per day.
The more you affirm, the quicker your subconscious mind will be impressed with this idea of climbing the ladder, and the quicker it will manifest in the 3D.
If you can’t easily visualise, you can just affirm instead but make sure you do it for a good period of time everyday — at least 10 minutes daily.
For this to manifest, you must persist in this experiment and keep doing it everyday until what you are seeing in your mind materialises in physical reality.
If you give up before it materialises, you failed the experiment because you did not persist.
An Alternative to “I will not climb a ladder”
If you’d like a different scenario to play around with, you could choose the following:
“I really wish people would stop giving me sunflowers.”
Use the instructions above but instead of climbing a ladder, visualise someone handing you a bunch of sunflowers (or any other flower you like.) See the yellow petals of the flowers and the dark centre at the heart of the flower. Feel the thick, fibrous, hairy stalks in your hand.
People keep giving you flowers and it’s getting overwhelming. “I really wish people would stop giving me sunflowers.” You could even see sunflowers falling from the sky.
You should choose the scenario that makes sense to you. It should be something surprising that doesn’t regularly occur in your everyday life – ideally something that hasn’t occurred in years. If people often gift you flowers, go with the ladder exercise instead. Or if you have to climb ladders regularly (e.g. for your job) go with the flower exercise.
You can also choose another scenario altogether. Just a note however that I’ve seen people test out the law with things that are more commonplace, such as seeing a golden retriever or an apple. These items are too ubiquitous to be meaningful proof of manifestation. Instead, when you test out the law, it needs to be an action you’re not doing regularly in your everyday life, or something that simply hardly ever happens to you (if at all), like receiving sunflowers or climbing a ladder.
As with any manifestation, certain rules apply:
1. Don’t make this experiment super important in your mind. Treat it like a game and let go of any resistance. Say this prayer if you are doubting or feeling impatient/frustrated “I cast my doubt/impatience/frustration onto the Christ within, and I go free now”
2. Don’t check the 3D, asking yourself “is the ladder here yet?” and wondering where it is – this is not ‘living in the end.” Imagination is reality and the world behind your eyes is more real than anything you see in the 3D, because the world behind your eyes is the movie projector that creates your 3D reality. Your 3D reality is just a shadow and a projection of what you were focusing on, usually several weeks or days ago. This guided meditation can help with this concept of turning your back on the 3D reality. If you use this meditation, see yourself climbing a ladder in it.
Don’t let doubt stop you
Note that belief is not necessary to manifest a desired outcome in the 3D and you don’t have to believe in the Law of Assumption or the Law of Attraction for this ladder exercise to work. The Law of Assumption is working for you all of the time (even if you don’t believe in it). The Law of Assumption works in the same way gravity works, in that even if you didn’t believe in gravity, you would still fall to the ground if you jumped off a cliff!
I offer a free online resource for manifesting your desired reality using the Law of Assumption — it’s a collection of online articles which are presented in the right order so that you can use them as a ‘how to’ guide. It’s quite a comprehensive resource and can help take you from A to B with almost any intention. You can find that here.
