The Law of Assumption (which was popularised by the New Thought writer and mystic Neville Goddard’s work) says that we manifest the circumstances of our lives according to who we are being – it is our identity and self-concept that creates our 3D world.
“Every man automatically expresses that which he is conscious of being. Without effort or the use of words, at every moment of time, man is commanding himself to be and to possess that which he is conscious of being and possessing” — Neville Goddard
So, in order to have something in our 3D world that we don’t currently have, the most effective way to go after it is to start embodying the character who has it, in our identity and self-concept.
Everything else is a downstream consequence of who we are being — the thoughts and feelings that we are identifying with, and reacting to are a downstream consequence of who we are being, and so are our beliefs and assumptions about life. Together, these create our lives.
So the answer to creating change in our world is not to try to change our thoughts, feelings or beliefs but instead to change our identity and concept of ourselves.
The great mystic Neville Goddard did talk a lot about the importance of becoming the person who has our desire, in order for it to manifest in our reality, but he didn’t write as much about HOW to become that person.
In this article I’m going to share what I have learned about how you can become the person who already has what you want. The ideas in this article are adapted from techniques and processes I learned in Joe Dispenza’s guided meditations, the DNRS program, and in Frederick Dobson’s book ‘Parallel Universes of Self’.
Let’s look at the first step in becoming the person who has your desire…
You need to find out who this person is and how they differ from who you are being right now.
As an example, let’s say that your desire is to own your own little homestead in the countryside and move your family there.
Who is this person who has their own homestead?
If it helps, you can approach this like you are writing a character in a play or a movie. The mystic and quantum physicist Vadim Zeland writes in his book ‘Reality Transurfing’ that every possibility that could exist in our lives, already exists. Manifesting the reality we desire isn’t about creating that possibility, but instead choosing the one that we want and then aligning with it by becoming the person who has it.
(Note that this isn’t about becoming someone completely different, instead you are becoming a slightly different version of yourself that already exists.)
Once you know who this character is, you can rehearse being them and play them. But the first step is to know who they are.
Let’s look at ways you can find out who this person is:
1. Ask questions
Meditate for 5-10 mins to quieten your mind. Then ‘tune in’ to this new character who has your desire. Ask them questions such as:
- Do you have any daily habits that I don’t currently have?
- Do I currently have any habits that you have ditched?
- How do you dress? Is it any different?
- Do you eat differently?
- What’s your financial situation like?
- What’s your posture like?
- How do you walk?
- What is your relationship like? (if applicable)
- Is your living situation the same? Has anything about it changed?
- Are you saying things I’m not currently saying?
- Have you stopped saying things I are currently saying/talking about?
- How do you see yourself?
- How are you different from ‘present-time me’ in other ways?
(Note that these questions are adapted from Frederick Dobson’s excellent book ‘Parallel Universes of Self’, which I highly recommend you read if you want to learn more about the Law of Assumption.)
Now let’s look at another possible way to flesh out this new character:
2. Get a scene from your future self
Meditate for 5-10 mins to get yourself into a relaxed state.
Ask your future self (who has your desire) for a scene that encapsulates your desired reality, and see what comes to you. A scene will spontaneously arise in your mind.
For example, if you are wishing to move your family to a homestead in the countryside, the scene you’re given could be something like this:
You’re sitting outside on a summer’s afternoon or evening with your partner on a swing seat, and your large vegetable garden or “food forest” is directly in your line of sight. You see the food growing and feel satisfied. Maybe you can hear chickens clucking in the distance as your chickens bed down for the night in their coop. Your partner holds your hand and you look at him/her, feeling fulfilled.
Write out your scene in detail. Make sure you are writing this from the first person perspective, rather than the third person perspective.
3. Decide on the energies associated with your new reality
When you have your scene have a think about: what are the energies that this ‘future you’ has access to, that you maybe aren’t accessing so much right now? Or, put another way: what are the energies behind your desire?
Here are some examples:
- Freedom (this is a big one for many people)
- Strength (physical or emotional)
In the scene mentioned above, where our homesteader is sitting on a swing seat with her partner, the energies she is seeking more of might be: fulfilment, rootedness and belonging (to a sense of place).
OK, now we have some information about who this person is, we need to rehearse being them and essentially get really comfortable being that character. At first this is not going to feel natural, but if you persist in it, it does become natural over time, and that is when your manifestation shows up.
Rehearsing your new character until you become them
Here’s how you do this:
1. Visualise your scene
Visualise the scene that your future self gave you, and connect with the positive energies you identified.
I would begin by standing up and describing this scene out loud in the first person.
“I’m sitting next to X on the swing seat on our back porch. It’s 8pm and I can hear crickets and the clucking of our chickens in their coop as they bed down for the night. The air is warm. I feel tired, in a good way after a day full of working on our land. The children are in bed. In front of me I can see many raised vegetable beds full of vegetables. He/she takes my hand and looks at me, with a look of pride and fulfilment on his/her face. We both feel so happy and fulfilled that our dream of owning our own homestead has come true.”
Next, choose an energy associated with your scene, and give it a colour. See that energy coming into your body though the top of your head and see it cascading down your body, filling all of your cells. In this one, it could be the feeling of fulfilment, which is dark blue. Narrate the energy coming into your body, for example: fulfilment comes into my head, my shoulders, my arms, etc, and all my cells are filled with fulfilment.
Rest and rejoice in that energy of fulfilment. Feel it as much as possible and for as long as you like, until you become very practised in feeling it and calling it to mind (or heart). If you can feel those energies multiple times per day, this can really help with manifesting your new reality in the 3D.
Keep doing this daily until you no longer desire your goal. This means that you have reached a state Neville Goddard calls ‘the Sabbath’ and it’s the best place to be to manifest your desire.
An alternative to visualising could be using guided meditations that help to connect you with the energy of your desire. For example, Joe Dispenza has abundance meditations which connect you with the energy of freedom, and love meditations which connect you with the energy of love and joy.
For more options, visit YouTube and search “guided meditation + the energy you’re seeking more of” e.g. “guided meditation love”. There are so many guided meditations out there which can help connect you with the energy behind your desire.
Let’s have a look at another step that you can go through to rehearse being the person who has your desire.
2. What would you be doing if you were already the person who had your desire?
Take those actions now, as much as practicable.
For example, let’s say that your desire is to buy your dream home in a particular area, but in your 3D reality, you don’t yet have all the funds needed to buy a home in that area. Go and view homes anyway.
In another example, let’s say you’re manifesting a pregnancy. You have a stack of pregnancy books but for some reason you haven’t started reading them yet. Start reading them and pretend to yourself that you’re pregnant already when reading them.
Obviously you won’t be able to do this in every case. If you have an injury for example, you may want to go jogging but perhaps it’s not a good idea just yet. Only take the actions that are practical now which can help you to embody the character who has your desire.
You might also want to ask yourself: what would I stop doing if I had this desired reality already in the 3D? Maybe you would stop obsessively consuming LOA content on YouTube or perhaps you would stop listening to sad love songs if you’re manifesting a new partner.
3. Stop identifying with thoughts and feelings that don’t align with this new character
Thoughts and feelings will come up that may be contrary to your desire – they often do. Don’t feel that you need to stop them. Instead, just don’t identify with them. Say to yourself “this is not my end result.”
4. Let yourself become frustrated with who you are currently being, if it doesn’t align with your new reality
Becoming the person who has your new reality is an organic process that will take on a life of its own as things progress. It won’t happen overnight and it has multiple stages, including the part where you can become quite frustrated with who you are being, and you end up naturally shifting to a different place because you really don’t like where you currently are. Frustration can be a part of the process — embrace every negative emotion that comes up and invite it in so that they can move through you more quickly. These negative emotions won’t manifest on their own. (It is only the negative emotions and thoughts that we identify with strongly that manifest in our 3D reality.)
I hope this article helps you in your manifesting process!
P.S. I wrote an article here about embodying the version of yourself that is experiencing your desired reality in the area of health. It has some examples in it that you may find helpful if you are working on embodiment for manifestation so I recommend you go read that article after reading this one.
